Blood Spot On Ferret’s Head Comes And Goes

What would cause a recurring blood spot on a ferret’s head?

Q: I have a ferret that has a spot on the top of his head. It comes and goes; the spot bursts with blood then goes away and comes back. I’ve attached a picture of his head. Please tell me he is alright.

A: Unfortunately, the picture is a little blurry so I cannot see the lesion on your ferret in as much detail as I would like. Skin masses on ferrets are common and are seen occasionally on top of the head.

The good news is that most skin masses in ferrets are benign and do not spread to other parts of the body. The bad news is that most of theses masses do not go away and must be removed by your veterinarian. It takes a very short time to remove a mass and, usually, that is all the treatment that is required.

If you do not treat this at all, it may likely continue to bleed periodically leading to possible infections and anemia for your ferret.
