Bissell Cleans Up Shelters

Homeless dogs and cats in Eastern Kentucky got a new place to stay while they wait for their forever homes. Find out how you can help this effort grow.

Thanks to shelter makeovers funded by a cooperative effort by Bissell Homecare Inc and nonprofits Foundation and Rescue University, homeless dogs and cats Eastern Kentucky will sleep, play and lounge more comfortably this summer.

Want to help other pet-related nonprofits across the U.S.? Through the end of the year, “Like” Bissell’s Facebook page  and the company will donate 50 cents to the Foundation, up to $50,000.

At Kentucky’s Rowan and Menifee County animal shelters, the changes courtesy of the makeovers – done over 8 days in May and June – are dramatic. Project volunteers pressure-washed the shelters’ floors and walls, repaired cracked mortar in kennels, painted the buildings inside and out, built raised pet beds, cleaned drains, replaced kennels and kennel grates, and improved fencing and expanded outdoor exercise spaces.

“As a longstanding supporter of pet adoption, Bissell was honored to help make these shelter renovations possible,” says Rich Sorota, senior vice president and general manager of global marketing and sales at Bissell. “Ultimately, we want to see more homeless pets welcomed into their forever homes, but we also believe they deserve a comfortable place to live in the interim.”

Rescue University also supplied the Rowan and Menifee County shelters with dog food and treats, bowls, leashes, collars, crates and cleaning products and transported 65 animals from the shelters to various communities in the Northeast and Midwest to be placed in permanent homes.
