Bird Term of the Day: Zoonosis

Zoonosis: (noun) A disease that can be transmitted from animals to humans. The plural of the word is zoonoses. Avian diseases that are zoonotic are psittacosis, salmonellosis and certain forms of mycobacteria (avian turbuculosis). Pet birds can transmit these diseases to people. Some zoonotic diseases that can be transmitted from other animals to humans include: anthrax, rabies, Lyme disease, monkey pox and West Nile virus (transmits from wild birds to mosquitoes to people).
