What a Westminster Week it was. A great show amid the chaos of Madison Square Garden renovations. An outstanding dog, Malachy, representing a trio of hugely admired members of the sport, collecting the ultimate prize in stellar company. And enough seminars, specialties, parties and awards functions to fill anyone’s dance card.
As a journalist and magazine editor, the awards luncheon hosted by the Alliance of Purebred Dog Writers on Sunday afternoon is a must. As a theater lover, I think no location could be more fitting than the legendary Sardi’s. The Hirschfeld caricatures of Broadway icons provide quintessential New York atmosphere and I firmly believe dog publications bring some drama to the table, in a good way.
Dogs in Review scored some major wins. Pictured clockwise from top left with APDW president Patricia Enright: Bo Bengtson, Best Editorial, “Is There a Place For the Small Hobby Kennel?” (October 2011); Allan Reznik, accepting for Richard Beauchamp, Best Column, “Success in Show Dogs”; Amy Fernandez, Best Series, “Icons of the Sport”; and David Frei, a nominee in the Non-Fiction Book category for Angel on a Leash, published by BowTie Press.
Bo Bengtson won this category for The Whippet, also published by BowTie Press. And we congratulate our friend David Frei as the recipient of the very special Stonehenge Award. Photos by Ernie Slone.
