An Evening of Muttin’ But Love

Los Angeles dog advocacy gala raises $40,000 to benefit the non-profit organization Wags and Walks.

The second annual Wags and Walks gala, Muttin’ But Love, brought together dog rescue leaders, celebrities and dog lovers from across Southern California on Oct. 23, 2013, raising $40,000 to benefit the non-profit organization Wags and Walks.

The event, presented by StyleHaul and WagAware, creators of a charm to promote dog rescue, led directly to the rescue and adoption of 15 dogs, and enables Wags and Walks to pursue their mission of rescuing at-risk dogs from Los Angeles area shelters, finding them safe and suitable permanent homes through adoption, advocacy and education.

“It was awe-inspiring to look around the gathering and be surrounded by hundreds of people who love dogs the way I do,’’ says Lesley Brog, founder of Wags and Walks. “When I founded Wags and Walks three years ago I wanted to spread the word through education and experience that shelter dogs could be the most family friendly, lovable dogs in the world and they belonged in homes, not shelters.’’

Being surrounded by so many supporters was moving, Brog says. “It was wonderful to share the evening with so many previous adopters, volunteers, fosters and the wonderful donors who help us afford all the medical bills we are faced with daily. I am convinced Wags and Walks is delivering that message and saving countless lives of deserving dogs.’’

The event brought together leaders in the dog rescue community, including Eldad Hagar of Hope for Paws, Annie Hart of the Bill Foundation, and renowned dog trainer Tamar Geller, plus celebrity guests C. Thomas Howell (The Amazing Spiderman) and Jennifer Missoni (Gossip Girl).

“My company’s goal is to raise as much awareness as possible for dog rescue through the sale of our charms and tonight’s success is just an indication that our goal can be achieved,’’ says Samantha Haas, founder of WagAware. “So many wonderful people from all walks of life were united tonight through their love of dogs.”

Amid a glittering poolside setting at the W Hotel in Westwood, the evening featured drinks, entertainment, and live and silent auctions for remarkable items, including trips to Santa Fe and Lake Tahoe; spa services including Dry Bar, Sally Hershberger, B2V Salon, and Bliss Spa, plus Lakers, Clippers and Dodgers tickets.

Editors of DOG FANCY, one of the event sponsors, shared a sneak peek at Rescue Me, a soon to be launched national publication dedicated to the world of rescue, plus Ready, Set, Rescue, a basic annual guide for new adopters.
