The general appearance of a Perro de Presa Canario is one of extraordinary power, especially suited to guard and defense work as well as the traditional purpose of driving cattle. The Perro de Presa Canario possesses a steady disposition and a noble, calm bearing, though he distrusts strangers. This dog breed is an accomplished fighter and has a deep, chilling bark, well suited to warning suspicious strangers of his intentions and abilities to inflict harm if necessary.
While the Perro de Presa Canario is a bold and powerful dog breed, this dog does not require a specific type of owner, provided his keeper is a caring, responsible dog person. The Perro de Presa Canario is very smart and extremely watchful. An owner with experience in training dogs has an advantage, as this dog breed learns quickly. Most Perro de Presa Canarios have a natural aptitude for training and are capable of learning most any discipline, including herding, Schutzhund, obedience, agility, protection work, and more. However, heavier Perro de Presa Canarios (from 110–130 lbs. or about 50–60 kgs.) are not appropriate for exercises requiring a great deal of agility.
The Perro de Presa Canario is indeed an ideal family dog, as in the home this dog breed is quiet, affectionate and sociable, invariably delighting in the company of children. Most children love dogs, and this dog breed loves children. Perro de Presa Canarios feel devotion for them, are quiet and let children play with them. This dog breed adores children and the elderly alike.
This dog breed’s calm disposition makes it ideal for life in a variety of settings, including a city apartment, a house with a yard or a large country estate. Perro de Presa Canario’s adaptability also includes changes in the weather, as these dogs do not mind excessively warm or cold climates.
In addition to this dog breed’s traditional uses—shepherding, hunting, guarding—today the Perro de Presa Canario also provides quality companionship to his owner, works as a therapy dog, visiting hospitals and nursing homes, and serves as an assistance dog for the handicapped, as a guide to the blind and a hearing dog for the deaf.
