Dogs In Review interviews Elena Edwards, co-breeder of GCh. Shiraz California Dreamin’, the Saluki that took a Group 1st and Reserve Best in Show at the 2012 AKC/Eukanuba National Championship held Dec. 15 and 16 in Orlando, Fla.
Dog Name: GCh. Shiraz California Dreamin’ ‘Harley’
Breeders: Valerie Nunes Atkinson, Michael Edwards and Elena Edwards
Owners: Nicklas and Ingunn Eriksson
Handler: Nicklas Eriksson
Won: The Hound Group at the 2012 AKC/Eukanuba National Championship
Dogs In Review: How did you feel when Harley got Group 1?
Elena Edwards: We were already thrilled, having just watched Harley chosen as one of the 12 finalists for the AKC/Eukanuba World Challenge, so when he won the AKC/Eukanuba Hound Group, something no Saluki had done before, we were over the moon with elation!
DIR: Other than winning Group 1 and Reserve Best in Show, what was the most memorable experience for you about AKC/Eukanuba?
EE: Probably our most memorable experience about the AKC/Eukanuba show is the fact that Harley has been invited to the AKC/Eukanuba World Challenge for four consecutive years … a feat no other dog has achieved to date! Harley has been awarded Runner-Up in the highly competitive World Challenge two of the four years. His Hound Group 1 and Reserve Best in Show wins are the icing on the cake! We couldn’t be more proud of Harley and our dear friends Nicklas and Ingunn Eriksson, who have expertly guided Harley to his many outstanding wins!
DIR: What is your most proud moment of Harley or his handler in 2012?
EE: Harley has had many incredible wins under highly respected judges, but we would have to say his Best in Show win where he defeated nearly 19,000 dogs at the 2012 World Dog Show in Salzburg, Austria, has to be our proudest moment. Although we couldn’t be there to experience the excitement in person, we were able to watch the Best in Show competition live on the Internet. What a thrill, indeed!
DIR: What was your favorite moment from having bred this great Saluki?
EE: Although winning Best in Show at the 2012 World Dog Show was Harley’s “most prestigious” win, it is the wonderful friendships that have evolved with Nicklas and Ingunn, as well as Harley’s co-breeder, Valerie Nunes Atkinson, that give us our greatest memories.
DIR: Do you plan on attending AKC/Eukanuba next year with this or another dog?
EE: We certainly do hope to attend, as well as participate in next year’s show. However, it’s a very long drive from California, as we don’t like to fly our dogs. Unfortunately, this makes the Orlando site a bit of a challenge for us!
DIR: What are your thoughts on the AKC/Eukanuba show?
EE: As breeders, we greatly appreciate the AKC/Eukanuba’s efforts to recognize accomplished breeders. It’s a wonderful venue!
