The lovebird genus name Agapornis was created from two words: the Greek word agapein, which means “to love,” and the Latin word ornis, from the Greek word “bird.” The lovebird genus Agapornis was created in 1836 by British ornithologist Prideaux John Selby. There are nine species of lovebirds in the Agapornis genus, which includes the most popular pet parrot lovebird, the peach-faced lovebird (Agapornis roseicollis).
