The shelter was small, just seven or eight kennels lined up in two rows, all in one room. In most of the kennels were small- to medium-sized barking dogs who bounced around as though they had springs in their feet. But she just sat quietly in her kennel and watched me. She couldn’t have weighed more than 20 pounds, and her fuzzy, charcoal-colored coat made her look like a dirty mop.
The kennel attendant glanced over at the dog, then at me. “That’s Midnight,” she said. “Would you like to meet her?”
I looked over at an energetic spaniel in another kennel. “How about him?” I asked.
