A Tail In Two Cities

Ginger is one lucky dog – she has not one but two families to love her.

Ginger, a Beagle, met Karen Spicer nearly four years ago when Spicer began dog-sitting for Ginger. Love at first tail wag, the two quickly became friends. After seeing their connection, Ginger’s owner (a wife and busy mother of four) thought up and offered a unique dog-sharing arrangement to Spicer last year. “It’s my fault for falling in love with someone else’s dog!” Spicer jokes.

Spicer picks Ginger up on the first Sunday of the month and drops her back on the third Sunday of the month. “It has been great because it allows both of us to enjoy her, as well have times when our schedules are more free,” Spicer says.

The arrangement has worked out to be the best of both worlds for everyone. When Ginger’s with Spicer, of Ellicott City, Md., she joins her at Riderwood Retirement Community, in Silver Spring, Md., where Spicer works. When she’s not with Spicer, she’s back with her original family, who raised her from a puppy.

Ginger just completed her orientation to be a Pets on Wheels dog, which means she can visit Renaissance Gardens, the assisted living/skilled nursing facility located at Riderwood. Ginger’s duties there include cheering up residents and staff.
“She loves to tell people that they are great,” Spicer says. “She is also great company for me,” she says. “I am a better person for having her.”
