A New Breed of Coed

Colleges open their doors to students' pets.


Ren Dylewisz, a junior at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Fla., takes her roommate Emmy with her everywhere. Emmy loves the walks and the attention. But what 1½-year-old spaniel mix wouldn’t? “She’s a really good companion,” Dylewisz says. “If I’m going through a tough breakup or time with friends or work, she’s here.”

A decade ago, a search for colleges that welcomed animals without gills in student housing turned up more jokes than hits. Now, colleges competing for students aren’t laughing at enrollment figures for pet-friendly schools.
