“A Dog’s Life,” a new musical that charts the rise of a canine named Jack from puppyhood to adulthood, premieres March 2-April 15 at American Heartland Theatre in Kansas City, Mo.
Sean Grennan and Leah Okimoto created the musical, in which human actors play the roles of dogs. Actors Jessalyn Kincaid plays the role of Little Dog and John-Michael Zuerlein plays Jack, the hero of the show.
Grennan told Playbill.com, “‘A Dog’s Life’ charts the life of Jack the dog and his accidental master, Joel, from the adoption to its inevitable conclusion. It differs, I think, from other canine-themed shows in that it tracks one dog’s life and all the stages he and his owner go through along the way.”

“A Dog’s Life” isn’t the only recent canine themed musical of late. In summer 2006 “Tails,” a musical about pound dogs waiting to be adopted, debuted in New York.
In addition, the musical “Bark!” – told and sung from a doggie point of view in a city animal shelter – held several performances in 2006. “Bark!” is currently scheduled to appear on April 27 at Theatre Memphis in Memphis, Tenn.
