There are two things that are widely known to bring a person peace of mind. Those two things are dogs and yoga. Or Doga, as author and Dogamahny founder Mahny Djahanguiri calls it.
“Doga is the sacred union between Dog and owner,” the Dogamahny website states. “Doga isn’t just about the physical. Having your dog included in your yoga practice enables you to observe ‘your attitude’ towards yourself and all living beings and get a deeper insight and understanding of behaviour patterns that arise from the mind.”
There are so many different yoga classes nowadays – from candlelight restorative to hot yoga and everything in between – I was not surprised to learn there was yoga for both humans and their canine companions. But it did have me wondering how it worked.
If you’re wondering the same thing, look no further than DOgA, a book written by Djahanguiri. Split into nine sections, including an introduction, DOgA offers insight into the practice of yoga and how to incorporate your dog into that practice. The two of you will become Yogi and Dogi. Yogis are yoga participants, while Dogis can either be participants or observers. The book delves into the philosophy of yoga, as well as that of Doga, which fall into the ethical category. In other words, be mindful of yours and your dog’s wants and needs and don’t force anything.
There are several poses, along with instructions, put forth in the book, including The Panting Dog, The Dog in a Chair, The Resting Dog and Dog Kisses Crow. They are modifications of existing yoga poses and vary in difficulty.
DOgA offers a lot of tips and interesting techniques for you and your dog to experience yoga together. If you love yoga and have a small dog you’d like to include in your routine, enter to win a copy of DOgA.
