According to the Chinese Astrology calendar, 2014 is the year of the horse. But let’s face it; there hasn’t been a good television show about horses since “Mister Ed.” So while the cat may remain underrepresented in the Chinese zodiac, in the year of 2014 television, the cat takes the cake. From a cartoon calico cowgirl to a cluster of feline footballers, from hellish tales of tailed tyrants to the one and only big time Lil’ BUB, here are five shows featuring four-footers you won’t want to miss!
Sheriff Callie’s Wild West
Mandy Moore (star of Disney’s “Tangled”) voices Callie, a calico cowgirl who acts as sheriff in her Wild West town of Nice and Friendly Corners. With her magic lasso and two trusty sidekicks, a woodpecker, the aptly named Deputy Peck, and a sweet natured cactus named Toby, Sheriff Callie sends the bad guys packing and keeps the peace in the friendliest town in the west. With a nod to the folklore of the Old West, the show centers around lessons on being a good friend and neighbor. And don’t miss kicking up your country boots with original songs in each episode. Moore’s musical mastery will have you yee-hawing along while teaching the tots all about sharing and caring. There’s no doubt that this kitty cowgirl will show all critters, big and small, how “the west was fun!”
Why I’ll watch and you should, too: As a mother of a 3-year-old and 1-year-old, Disney Jr. is a 24/7 staple at my house. But there are several reasons that this show speaks to me. With a dog named Calli and two calicos of my own, this show feels tailor-made for our family. We all know kids and kitties don’t always live in perfect harmony, but by introducing our furry friends to our little ones in such a fun environment, Sheriff Callie can show our small fries that our cats are truly cool. And a leading female role model in feline form? Now that’s truly the cat’s pajamas!
Sheriff Calli’s Wild West premieres Jan. 20 on Disney Junior at 5 p.m. (ET/PT) or watch anytime on WATCHDisneyJunior.com
Kitten Bowl 2014
Move over mutts for the next gridiron greats! The first ever Kitten Bowl is here to conquer the cute. Animal advocate, Beth Stern plays host while the legendary John Sterling, radio voice of the NY Yankees, serves as the official purr-fect play-by-play announcer. What can we expect from football playing felines? My guess is a lot of adorable ball batting, a ton of too cute touchdowns and some furry field goals! Including a host of star studded appearances by Regis Philbin, Rachael Ray, Hoda Kotb, Lisa Vanderpump, Bob Harper, Renée Herlocker, Chuck Nice, Maksim Chmerkovskiy, Carrie Ann Inaba, Nicky Hilton, Kelly Rutherford, Aiden Turner, Julian Starks and many more!
Why I’ll watch and you should, too: How can you miss a chance to see kitties making television history? Help cheer on the cats and show the pups (and humans too!) there’s some new players on the field – and they’re feline(ing) like winners!

Puppy Bowl X Halftime Show
The puppies might be making the plays, but the best part of this game is the halftime show featuring their cat counterparts. Internet icon Keyboard Cat is back and this year will be performing his very own rendition of Bruno Mars’ “Locked Out of Heaven.” Planned during the performance is a 30-kitten domino topple while one whiskered daredevil will wow with a grand entrance by parachuting onto the field. As if that wasn’t enough, Lil BUB will be checking in (and cheering on) throughout the game from her home station in Chicago.
Why I’ll watch and you should too: So much whiskered wonderfulness in one place! Keyboard Cat! Lil’ BUB! But of course I was had at “30 kitten domino topple” and you should be too.

Lil BUB’s Special Special
Lil BUB finally hits the big time tube in a super special special! When not traveling through space and time with her powerful mind or lighting up the interwebs with her delightful demeanor, Lil BUB is just one of the girls. And every girl needs her own special slumber party. When her owner, Mike, is away, Lil BUB will play, inviting over a wild cast of furry friends to watch Andrew W.K.’s new clip show “Party Animals.” Under the watchful eye of “bubbysitter” Amy Sedaris, Lil BUB will partake in everything you’d expect in a slumber soiree – pizza, charades and even more hysterical hijinks including prank phone calls and pillow fights! Lil BUB’s rival, Colonel Meow, might even appear to stir up some shenanigans. And to top off the night, Lil BUB will unveil a “purrfect” space magic surprise that is sure to leave your tongues wagging too!
Why I’ll watch and you should, too: Because it’s the BUB!
